It’s so important to remove all traces of makeup before you go to bed but as you may know, not all makeup removers are equal. Sohnee has kindly tested out a bunch in this beauty roundup – everything from wipes to cleansing milks!

I admit it! I’m guilty of going to bed with makeup on. It’s terrible, I know, but c’mon – you know you’ve done it, too. We’ve all had our moments when we’re just too tired to walk to the sink and wash it all off. On those nights that you just don’t feel like splashing water, using a makeup remover might be just the key to making sure your skin has a chance to recover from a whole day of stress.
There are a lot of makeup removers on the market, so here are a few to consider when you’re choosing the best one for you:
Almay Oil Free Gentle Makeup Remover Pads and Towelettes
Almay has always been a brand associated with sensitive skin, so I was a bit surprised that the makeup remover pads actually made my eyes sting a bit. They were fairly effective at removing the rest of my makeup, though, and the size of the pads make them very convenient for travel. The towelettes are gentle on my skin and did a pretty good job of removing everything effectively. Overall, these are decent options for drugstore brand removers.
Annabelle Eye Makeup Remover Lotion
The biggest draw for me with this one is the pump. It makes it super easy for me to use, especially if I’m already half-asleep! This one sits near my bathroom sink for easy access. It takes a bit of time to remove absolutely everything, but it doesn’t sting when I use it on my eyes. The only drawback is that it’s designed only for eye makeup removal; I prefer to use something that can take care of my whole face at once.
Maybelline Clean Express! The Flash Clean Makeup Removing Lotion
Why do all of these removers have such long names?! I’ve been using this one for over a year now. I like it because it does two things: removes makeup gently (even waterproof!) and moisturizes your skin. Some makeup removers can leave your skin feeling dry and you end up needing to moisturize afterwards. This lotion lets you skip a step before bed. Considering how lazy I can be about taking off makeup, this lets me get through the process faster. There’s no scent either, which is always an extra bonus for me.
Avon Elements Nourishing Cleansing Milk
I’ve already talked about this one before. It does a really good job with removing everything gently. This is another one I keep in my bathroom for regular use.
Benefit They’re Real Remover
Elaine has already discussed this one and then gave it to me to try. It’s another cleansing lotion, similar to the one from Maybelline. Unfortunately, I found that it didn’t do as good of a job as my trusty Maybelline lotion; I had to put a bit more pressure on my eyelids to get everything off of them. Plus, I still had to wash my face after using it.
Caudalie Micellar Makeup Remover Cleansing Water
Holy moly, we have a winner! It’s a cleanser with a toner, feels amazing on my skin, doesn’t require rinsing afterwards, and the best part – no animal testing!! I want to use it everyday, but I also don’t want it to run out. I’ve never used anything from this brand before, but I’m going to have to start looking at their other products.
Have you used any of these makeup removers? Which one is your favourite? Do you prefer to use a drugstore or high-end remover?
