Remember this post from last week? Well it was a snowy, snowy night the day of the event but that didn’t stop my husband and I from checking out Magiks Home Furnishings. The weather didn’t seem to deter anyone as it was pretty packed the whole time we were there!
As soon as I stepped into the space, besides the fact that I was wearing a winter coat I felt like I was some place exotic. But also some place very warm and comfortable. My family is from Indonesia so while I was born and raised in Toronto/GTA I grew up surrounded by decor similar to that found at Magiks.
These cushions are hand woven from fibres of the abaca plant (banana family) in the Philippines.
Every piece in the store has a story. If you walk in the owners will be happy to share with you the history and meaning of each piece. If you see a similar piece like the one above beware if there is no fish hanging from the bird’s mouth! Apparently it’s bad luck!
Many of the pieces have religious symbolism as the Philippines is a very religious country. I was drawn to the more modern pieces such as this beautiful light fixture.
If only I had a house grand enough to accommodate it 😉
Decorating is such an art form and takes a keen eye. My husband is actually the one that picks out key pieces for our home. While I have an eye for what I feel is beautiful, he’s got the eye for scale and seeing the overall picture come together. I’m looking forward to (another) year of home renovations and I’m going to take inspiration from Magiks to add some warmth to our home.
This final piece I wanted to share with you was probably my favourite as was one of the first things I noticed as I entered the store.
A huge portrait of the the Rodel’s (one of the owners) family in the Philippines. I love black and white photos but this one struck me as I felt like I was there in the kitchen with his family. I love it! It’s a spontaneous shot that captures a memory. The best pieces of artwork and home decor are those that can evoke feelings of family love. 🙂
Thanks Rodel for the invite!
